Upon hearing of the bounty placed on the superheroes of the United States, Dr. Victor Von Doom opens up his country or Latveria as refuge for all threatened except The Fantastic Four. After a brief scuffle with Magneto, who was hired by Dr. Doom to capture Reed Richards and kill the Fantastic Four, Johnny Storm, The Human Torch, accompanies the rest of his family on what is to be a quick trip to the moon to place the Richards' children in the care of the Inhumans. Instead, the quartet is transported back through time to a far away planet named Krypton, in a distant, other-dimensional galaxy. After a very tense face off with the planets guardians, the group is welcomed with open arms by Jor-El, a Kryptonian elder.

While making plans to return the Fantastic Four to Earth, the group is interrupted by General Zod, a Kryptonian heavyweight and rival of Jor-El. While the others are hesitant to confront the bully, Johnny steps up and earns the ire of the General in true Human Torch fashion.

After the General has left, threatening a charge of treason if he is not delivered the plans to the device to be used to return the Fantastic Four to their own time and planet, Reed reveals that the ship will be fueled by a combination of Kryptonian soil and crystals, ignited by the nova flame of The Human Torch. Johnny quickly agrees, seeing the story of his heroics as a way to impress women.

The Torch's eye is suddenly caught by Jor-El's young intern, Shara-Za. In the ensuing weeks, the two start an intimate relationship, which is quickly discovered and exploited by General Zod. The General threatens the Torch with death for his indiscretion unless Reed delivers to him the radioactive green rock created when Kryptonian soil is exposed to the Human Torch's Nova Flame. Reed agrees in order to spare Johnny's life, but quickly dismisses Johnny in anger until needed for another burn test.
