Dying twice and resurrected as many times by former Avengers teammate Wanda Maximoff, aka The Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, wakes up after the events know as the House of M a broken, disillusioned man; A hero in a city that no longer wants its long time protectors and an Avenger in a world where Earth's Mightiest no longer stand united. Hanging up the bow and arrows, Clint and his newly resurrected wife Barbara 'Bobbi' Morse-Barton, the Avenger once known as Mockingbird, enter private life. Gaining employment as the head of security for long time friend Tony Stark's Stark Industries, Clint enjoys a low key, civilian life for almost a year, until a tragedy hits very close to home. Realizing that the world needs it heroes, even if it doesn't necessarily want them, the one time Prince of the Thunderbolts once again dons his familiar purple costume. After several months of working side by side with his wife, Hawkeye and Mockingbird are soon tapped by Nick Fury to reform the Avengers, amid chaos caused by a high priced bounty placed on every superhero and their families, and the mounting realizations that the world is slipping further into chaos from which no single person could save it.

While investigating an explosion at a high priced law firm, Hawkeye and Mockingbird are reunited with a newly reborn Thor, as well as Thor's once evil half brother turned reformed half sister Loki, and the X-Man Angel. The group decides that the meeting is more than chance, and the Avengers are reborn, soon joined by Iron Man and Spider-Man.

Hearing rumors that the Avengers are getting back together with Hawkeye championing the effort, goverment agent Henry Peter Gyrich employs the services of Andreas Von Strucker, son of HYDRA patriarch Wolfgang Von Strucker, and the current Swordsman, to take out Hawkeye at any cost and deliver the Avengers back to Gyrich's control. Citing professional and personal wrong-doings against himself, Gyrich has promised the Swordsman an as of yet unrevealed reward.

During the press conference announcing the return of the Avengers, HYDRA strikes. During the ensuing battle, the Swordsman confronts Hawkeye. During the brief yet brutal fight, the Swordsman manages to gain the upperhand, using the distraction of the battle and Hawkeye's ignorance of his swords power, slicing the archer open and coming within moments of a killing strike before the timely intervention of Mockingbird. Not wishing to reveal his hand in the initial strike, and disgsted at what he feels has become an underhanded fight, the Swordsman flees, letting his ranks to fend for themselves at the hands of the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D., vowing that he and Hawkeye have not seen the last of each other.

The Avengers have no time to rest, quickly called back into action by a desperate Batroc the Leaper, who's daughter has been possessed by an Ifrit in an attempt to gain revenge on the Taskmaster. Irritated at the fact the Batroc forces Mockingbird to join his search team along with Angel while leaving Hawkeye behind with the remaining Avengers, Hawkeye gets into a verbal sparring match with Captain America, questioning the Star-Spangled Avenger's authority after such a long absence and trying to assert the Archer's leadership of the team. Cooler heads prevail, and the team sets out in search of The Taskmaster and the missing girl.

Marie Batroc is quickly located and, after a brief skirmish, is freed of the Ifrit's control over her. Marie and her father are sent home. As the other Avengers clean up, Hawkeye is summoned back to Avengers Tower by Nick Fury. The Sowrdsman and HYDRA invaded Hawkeye's childhood hometown of Waverly, Iowa, and laid waste to the small town. Before any other teams can respond, Fury agrees to help Hawkeye sneak into the town to confront the Swordsman.

Hawkeye arrives in Waverly and quickly takes down a lone sentry, a HYDRA lackey, and steals his uniform to enter the city undetected, though he initally has little luck finding the Swordsman. Upon hearing of the devastation wrought by HYDRA, Henry Peter Gyrich also visits the city, at the request of Von Strucker. It is revealed that in exchange for Hawkeye's demise, Gyrich promised Von Strucker that he would use the scientific resources of the US government to resurrect Andrea Von Strucker, The Swordsman's sister. Gyrich is infuriated at the extreme measures taken by Von Strucker, and seems to be losing touch with reality as he explains his reasons for issuing the hit on Hawkeye.

Mockingbird soon makes her way to Waverly to assist Hawkeye, but is soon captured and taken prisoner. She is confined to a small room with dozens of other women, who appear to have been beaten and tortured by the soldiers of HYDRA, forced into service n what seems to be a makeshift brothel. As she tries to gain her bearings, three soldiers begin to rape her.

Having heard the Mockingbird was taken hostage, and learning where the Swordsman is, Hawkeye quickly begins to make his way for another showdown with Von Strucker. Hawkeye is able to get the drop on the Swordsman, and the fight quickly swings his way before Hawkeye is distracted by the presence of Gyrich, allowing the Swordsman to knock Hawkeye unconscious with his bio-electric attack. In the meantime, Madame Hydra has freed Mockingbird from her captors, revealing that she has more sinister, unnamed plans of Hawkeye's wife.

Hawkeye wakes up chained to a catwalk above an old railroad assembly yard, an area The Swordsman has chosen for a public execution of the archer. Before carrying out the murder, Von Strucker taunts Hawkeye with pictures of Mockingbird being attacked, trying to convince Hawkeye that Mockingbird has run off with one of HYDRA's soldiers rather than divulge that fact the he allowed Viper to slip away under his nose. During the verbal joust between the two, Gyrich is approached by an Ifrit, which tells him that it knows of a dark, personal secret the politician is hiding, and that it can give him the power to leave a mark on the world. Gyrich accepts the offer, and during his transformation and escape, Hawkeye is himself able to get free from his bond and attack an unsuspecting Swordsman. After a brief scuffle in which Hawkeye throws the Swordsman off my commenting on the questionable relationship between the Von Strucker twins, Hawkeye cuts off the Swordsman arm with his own sword, then runs it through Von Strucker's abdomen, though sparing him a killing blow. Hawkeye's show of mercy is seemingly for naught, as the Swordsman tried to wringle free and instead falls through the railing of the catwalk and crashes through an old boxcar several stories below, seemingly to his death. A small HYDRA battion quickly decends upon the train yard, and Hawkeye decided enough is enough and calls for assistance from the other Avengers. The call is quickly answered by first Iron Man and then Loki, who transposts the three back to Avengers Tower. Hawkeye quickly fills his teammates in and sets off to assemble the Avengers and try to locate his missing wife.

Meanwhile, Madame Hydra is on her way back to HYDRA's base to meet with Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker, who is in the process of torturing the Swordsman, who was traded back to the Baron by Loki for an ancient statue. Viper explains to the Baron her plan to use Mockingbird as a bargaining chip with the Dark Lord Mephisto for the power needed to return HYDRA to it's former glory, before being interuppted by a HYDRA soldier crashing into her private room. Viper is quickly subdued by Mockingbird, who has managed to escape her restraints. Mockingbird quickly makes her way back to New York and Avengers Tower.

As Hawkeye and Mockingbird reconcile, the Swordsman stews in his father's dungeon, having been traded as part of a deal that saw Loki retrieve an ancient eagle statue from Baron Von Strucker. Just as he determines his plight to to useless as he has no way to escape, he is approached by an Ifrit who promises hi the means to extract his revenge.
