Harvey Dent began his story in New York City. Working for the District Attorney's office, Dent had built a reputation as one of the city's finest prosecutors, having never lost a case. But all of his success masked a concealed history of child abuse, suffered at the hands of his alcoholic father, Christopher Dent. Even now, Dent was haunted by nightmares recalling the cruel games his father played with him, in particular his father's routine of flipping a coin - his lucky silver dollar - and beating young Harvey if it came up heads.

But in spite of this past, Harvey Dent had earned a new life for himself in New York City. He was a successful attorney, like he'd always wanted to be. He had a wife, Gilda, whom he loved dearly. And in Matt Murdock - whom he had known since their shared time in law school, and regularly had lunch with - he had a close friend. But all the same, he found himself being drawn back to his hometown of Gotham City, to attend a benefit for mutant rights. At the benefit, Harvey Dent met billionaire Bruce Wayne for the first time, and the two argued about how to deal with the deep-rooted infrastructure of organised crime in Gotham. The party descended into chaos when it was crashed by the violent alien being Lobo - a herald for Galactus - and Harvey and Gilda needed to be escorted to safety by the arriving heroes.

In the wake of this attack, Dent planned to make a hasty exit from Gotham, sending Gilda off on the first plane back to New York, and preparing to follow soon afterwards. But then The Joker shocked the city to its core by murdering Mayor Kroll, Commissioner Loeb and District Attorney Carl Finch. As Gotham desperately struggled to regain order, Hamilton Hill was crowned Mayor, Jim Gordon became the new Commisioner of Police, and the DA's office approached Harvey Dent about filling the role of District Attorney for the remainder of Finch's term. After much consideration, Dent accepted. And he hasn't left Gotham since.

Immediately, in his first speech as acting District Attorney, Dent made his intentions clear: to pursue Carmine "The Roman" Falcone, and Salvatore "Boss" Maroni - the patriarchs of Gotham's two most powerful crime families - and bring down their networks of corruption. His staunch belief in justice brought him to the attention of Batman, who quickly enlisted Dent as an ally in his war on crime. He also found himself in a battle of wills with The Joker. But the greatest shock faced by Dent in these early days as District Attorney came when he was confronted by his father. Now an old, frail, repentant man, Christopher Dent attempted to make amends with his son, with little success, and gave him the parting gift of his lucky silver dollar. Dent remembered the coin well, but this remnant of the past brought fresh torment when he realised it was a trick coin, with heads on each side.

This was just the beginning of Dent's suffering. He soon became a target of the crime families he vowed to bring to justice. On Falcone's request, Sal Maroni masterminded a plan to bring Dent under his control. While the supervillain Electro kidnaped Gilda in New York, Dent was assaulted by the psychotic Scarecrow in Gotham, sprayed with Fear Gas that brought all his repressed terrors raging back to the surface. Upon recovery, Dent was informed that his wife was Scarecrow's hostage, and that he had to end his campaign against Maroni and Falcone if he wanted to save her. Instead, Dent refused to give in, bravely revealing to the world in a live press conference that Gilda had been kidnapped, but that he refused to be intimidated. Dent then turned to Batman to help him rescue Gilda. In a battle that also involved the mutant Nightcrawler, Scarecrow and Electro were defeated and incarcerated, and Gilda was reunited with her husband.

For a brief time, Harvey Dent was happy. He and Gilda lived together in Gotham, and with elections approaching, she encouraged him to run for the office of District Attorney, this time for a full term. Dent did this, and won the election in a landslide victory. For his bravery, and his sacrifice, Harvey Dent had become a hero, the White Knight of Gotham City.

But this moment of triumph was destroyed by a dark twist of fate. As Harvey Dent gave his acceptance speech before crowds of adoring supporters, he and Gilda were wounded in a drive-by shooting. It was an assassination attempt organised by Maroni, furious at Dent's earlier defiance. As the second season drew to a close, the lives of Harvey and Gilda Dent were left hanging in the balance.
